How to Renew a 10-Year Passport (Age 16+)

Passport renewal applicants aged 16 or older receive 10-year passports. In most cases, applicants do not have to appear personally, and may designate someone else to submit their renewal application at the Embassy on their behalf.

Passport Applications Requiring a Personal Appearance

(If you do not meet any of the below requirements, you do not need to apply in person and may have someone else bring your application, supporting documents, applicable fees, and current passport to the Embassy on your behalf.)

You MUST apply for a passport in person if:

  1. Your previous passport was issued when you were under 16, or your (or your child's) current passport was issued for a 5-year validity period. (For passport applications for minors under the age of 16, please see the Renew Minor Passport section).

  2. Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or mutilated. Please see the section on lost, stolen, damaged or mutilated passports.

  3. You are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time, please see the First Time U.S. passports section.
