Embassy outreach in Sabah to promote “Study in the USA,” demystify U.S. visa policy, and promote Lincoln Corner
On September 25 and 26, 2008 at seminars hosted by Lincoln Corner Sabah and University Malaysia Sabah, Embassy Outreach Officer Dan Claffey and IRC Librarian Harvinder Kaur explained the U.S. Embassy’s information outreach programs in Malaysia to groups of government librarians, professors and university students. The two seminars focused on educational opportunities in the United States (including the visa procedures involved), as well as the large variety of electronic, print and multimedia resources available through the Lincoln Corners.
Lincoln Corners are special collections of information about the United States of America that are provided to state libraries in various provinces of Malaysia to better inform the public about American business and educational opportunities, U.S. history and culture, travel tips, and other topics to promote mutual understanding and stronger ties between the United States and Malaysia. Feedback from participants indicated that they gained new insights about educational opportunities in the United States and about U.S. visa policies and procedures at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Librarians who were present appreciated the various features of the EbscoHost database, a research service available through the Lincoln Corners (located in Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, KL and Malacca). The seminar enhanced librarians’ confidence in using the database more efficiently and in promoting it to their users.
