English program at the Malacca Lincoln Corner
The Public Affairs Section organized a one-day English program at the Malacca Lincoln Corner on August 18, 2008. More than 70
students and teachers practiced English by listening, speaking, and reading during interactive sessions on American sports, music,
and politics led by American Embassy staff. Students even participated in a team treasure hunt.
Form 4 students from many different schools learned about American culture and the importance of teamwork by collaborating
on team logos and cheers and by participating in a team songwriting contest. Awards were given for the best teamwork, and students
voted on their favorite American sport and song. They even got to vote for whom they want to be the next American president!
At the end of the day, students reported that they felt more confident speaking English and they enjoyed interacting with
students from other schools and from other cultural backgrounds. Several students shared feedback about the program, saying,
"I learned that we should cooperate no matter what we do to ensure success."
"The sessions were fun, as they showed us what America is all about."
"I learned that each and every group member plays an important role to win or to be noticed."
"I learned how to vote on election day, to choose a leader wisely."
